Frequently Asked Questions

Lawn Care

Why should I aerate my lawn?

Core aeration allows nutrients important for lawn health to move more easily into the soil and increases water uptake, reducing puddling and runoff. It reduces compaction and promotes healthy turf roots, reducing stress during times of heat and drought.

When is the best time to seed?

Most grass in this area is cool-season, meaning the best time to seed is in late summer/early fall, as there are heavier dews, cooler temperatures, and shorter days. The ground temperature is still warm, helping to increase the germination of the seed. There is also less weed pressure, as most weed seeds germinate in the spring and will compete with the grass seedlings. Seeding can be done in the spring but may not be as successful.

How long do I need to keep my pets and kids out of the yard after it’s treated?

It is best that anything we apply have time to dry before kids and pets are exposed to the lawn. However we advise to keep pets and children off the lawn for about 24 hours after it’s treated.

How long before the weeds die after a lawn treatment?

The weeds usually die about 10-14 days after a weed application.

Can I get temporary lawn-mowing services or do I have to have a year-long contract?

Smitty’s does not require a contract, however we ask for an advance cancellation.

When am I charged for services?

Once a service is completed, we will input it into our system. Our billing is done monthly for mowing, and for spraying/fertilizing it is done as the service is completed. For landscape installation, we require a 30% deposit when the contract is signed and the rest is due upon completion.

When should I expect to see results in my yard?

The condition of your lawn prior to treatment influences the amount of time before you see results.

What kind of weather conditions keep my yard from being treated?

Due to drifting, we do not applicate when wind speed becomes excessive. We also do not spray in times of excessive heat, as it can cause spray to volatize and drift off the intended application site.

Will your lawn care service continue year to year?

Your lawn care service will continue from year to year unless we’re not to. Continuing the service year-to-year is the best way to maintain a lawn and it allows us to do applications at proper times.

What are some lawn watering tips?

Your lawn usually requires 1-2” of water per week, depending on factors like soil type, temperature, and humidity. We recommend long, infrequent watering (1-2 times per week). Your soil should be moist to a depth of 6-12” after a watering. For best results water early in the morning. At midday, more water evaporates than goes into the soil. Evening watering invites trouble because plants that stay wet overnight can be more prone to developing certain diseases that thrive in moist conditions.

We are happy to work around your schedule if you have a certain big day coming up. We just ask that you let us know as soon as possible so that we may have time to adjust our schedule.
